Gomes homers twice as Flyers flog RiverHawks

August 2, 2010 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Joey Gomes hit two home runs on Monday as the Schaumburg Flyers beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 12-5, at Road Ranger Stadium.

Gomes was 3-for-5 and drove in five runs. Mario Delgado also homered for the Flyers.

Rockford’s John Wagle and Travis Scott were each 3-for-5, in front of a near-sellout crowd of 3,009. Scott gave the RiverHawks an early lead with a two-run single in the first inning.

Delgado hit a game-tying, two-run homer in the second inning. Kit Pellow singled in a run in the third to put the Flyers in front, 3-2. Schaumburg never lost the lead. Gomes led off the sixth inning with a towering drive to left field and hit a three-run homer off the scoreboard during Schaumburg’s five-run seventh inning.

Schaumburg starter Brett Harker (5-7) gave up three runs on seven hits over six innings for the win. Tom Lyons went the last three innings and was awarded his second save. Rockford starter Brett Durand (6-6) gave up eight runs on 13 hits, the most by a Rockford pitcher this year, in 6 1/3 innings.

The series continues at 7:05 p.m. on Two For Tuesday. Tickets are available at two for the price of one.
