July 22, 2010 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks have added a pitcher and released another.

Rockford’s only professional baseball team has announced on Thursday that it has signed right-hander Emary Frederick. The RiverHawks made room with the release of Couri Benz.

Frederick, a former New York Mets prospect, was 1-1 with a 3.48 ERA in 35 relief appearances between Advanced-A St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton this season before he was released by the Mets. Frederick is in his fourth year of professional baseball, and has a 7-11 record with a 4.70 ERA.

Benz, a true rookie out of Long Island University, made one relief appearance for Rockford. He allowed a run on two hits and issued a walk. Benz faced three batters and was unable to record an out.

The RiverHawks’ next home game is at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, July 27 against Winnipeg. It’s the Big Splash Spectacular and a Two-For Tuesday.

The RiverHawks are members of the Northern League, an eight-team independent professional baseball league in its 18th season.
