July 19, 2010 - JOLIET, Ill. – The Joliet JackHammers defeated the Rockford RiverHawks, 5-4, in 11 innings Monday night at Silver Cross Field. An unearned run decided a pitcher’s duel between Kyle Wright and Rory Shortell.

The RiverHawks opened the game with back to back two-out RBI singles from Travis Scott and Patrick O’Sullivan to give Wright a two-run lead before he threw a pitch. O’Sullivan’s single was the last RiverHawk hit until the eighth inning. Shortell retired 13 consecutive batters in that span.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Freddie Thon tied the game at 2-2, with a two-run homer off Wright. Two of the four hits Wright allowed in 7 1/3 innings led to all three runs allowed. Wright was activated from the disabled prior to the game and hadn’t pitched since July 4.

William Jackell relieved Shortell with one out and runners on base. Rockford took a 4-2 lead after with runs from Jono Brooks and Jake Eigsti. All four RiverHawks runs were charged to Shortell, who pitched 7 1/3 innings. He allowed just four hits, but walked four.

Josh Flores ended Kyle Wright’s night with a pinch-hit homer with one out in the eighth inning. Wright left the game with a 4-3 lead.

Manny Olivares tried for a five-out save, but Jon Nelson had other plans. Nelson homered off Olivares with one out in the ninth and sent the game to extra innings, tied 4-4.

Brett Durand (4-5), pitched the extra frames for Rockford and recorded five strikeouts for all five outs. Chris Colton singled with one out, and advanced to third on a two-out single from Roberto Mena. Colton scored on the next play when Flores hit a chopper fielded by Brooks; a low errant throw allowed Colton to score the winning run.

Kyle Dahman (2-1) allowed a walk in two scoreless innings of relief for the win.

Mike Wood will look for his first win as a RiverHawk Tuesday, when he faces Devin Anderson and the JackHammers at 6:10 p.m.
