Clutch hits key to win as RiverHawks take series
« Back

July 18, 2010 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – To paraphrase Yogi Berra, not even the inning is over until it's over.

The RiverHawks scored five runs – four of them with two outs – in the bottom of the third inning and went on to beat Lake County, 11-7, on Sunday at Road Ranger Stadium.

The RiverHawks took three of four from the Fielders for their first series victory in a month. Rockford outscored Lake County, 42-36, in the four-night slugfest. The RiverHawks scored 23 two-out runs to the Fielders’ 19.

Travis Scott (above, file) hit his second home run, a two-out shot in the sixth inning, for Rockford. Juan Valdes, Jeff Dunbar, Zach Larson and Guillermo Martinez homered for Lake County, in front of a near-sellout crowd of 2,703.

Valdes homered with two outs in the third to give the Fielders a 3-2 lead. Rockford sent 10 to the plate in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Lake County starter Garry Bakker, who walked six in 2 2/3 innings and threw four wild pitches – all in the third – began the inning with a four-pitch walk of John Wagle. Wagle scored from first base when the Fielders committed two errors on Jason James’ single to right field. James ended up at third when the misplays were complete.

With two outs, Bakker (3-5) gave up consecutive RBI singles to Pat O’Sullivan, Evan McArthur and Ian Church. Church scored on three wild pitches by Bakker as the RiverHawks took a 7-3 lead.

Rockford starter Roger Lincoln left after Lake County began the sixth inning with home runs by Larson and Martinez and a single by Amos Ramon. Lincoln (4-4) got the win. Mike McTamney and John Huizinga combined for four innings of scoreless relief.

Rockford last won a series when it took two of three June 18-20 at Gary. The RiverHawks had not won a home series since June 11-13, when they took two of three from Joliet.

The RiverHawks hit the road for seven games, the first four at Joliet. They play the Jackhammers at 6:10 p.m. Monday. The RiverHawks’ next home game is at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, July 27 against Winnipeg. It’s the Big Splash Spectacular and a Two-For Tuesday.
