RiverHawks sign rookie, release Millan

July 5, 2010 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – A rookie slugger has joined the Rockford RiverHawks.

Rockford’s only professional baseball team announced on Monday that it has signed outfielder Jared Richmond. Richmond hit .393 with a school-record 23 home runs and 71 RBI this spring at NCAA Division II Tusculum College.

South Atlantic Conference coaches voted Richmond the league’s Player of the Year in April. Richmond, who hit 34 home runs in two years with the Pioneers, is the school’s career leader. He previously played at Arkansas-Ft. Smith.

The RiverHawks made room on the roster with the release of catcher Elvin Millan, Jr. Millan hit .214 with three RBI in 20 games with the RiverHawks.

The RiverHawks are members of the Northern League, an eight-team independent professional baseball league in its 18th season.
