July 3, 2010 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks have added two to the roster.

Rockford’s only professional baseball team announced on Saturday that it has signed pitcher Manny Olivares and catcher Franco Valdez. The RiverHawks also placed pitcher Chuck Lukanen on the seven-day disabled list. They made room on the roster with the release of pitchers Justin Knoff and Chris Pfalzgraf.

Olivares, a former New York Mets farmhand, spent six years in affiliated ball. Last year at Class A Savannah and short-season Class A Brooklyn, he was a combined 2-4 with a 3.75 ERA. He has LS-3 status in the Northern League.

Valdes, a rookie, threw out 28 percent of attempted base stealers this spring at the University of Virginia. He hit .217 with a home run and 13 RBI for the Cavaliers. As a junior last spring, he hit .342 during Virginia’s tournament run, which ended at the College World Series.

Lukanen, who had no record and a 5.07 ERA in six appearances, was put on the DL because of arm fatigue. Knoff was 0-1 with a 9.01 ERA and a save in eight appearances. Pfalzgraf, who was released from the DL, was 0-2 with a 5.65 ERA in nine appearances.

The RiverHawks are members of the Northern League, an eight-team independent professional baseball league in its 18th season. Advertising and ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Games are broadcast live on ESPN 1380 (WTJK-AM) and on ESPN1380.com.
