May 16, 2010 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – After a pair of weekend victories at Gary, the Rockford RiverHawks earned a 10-1 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats Sunday afternoon at Road Ranger Stadium to cap a perfect spring-training schedule. Kevin House tripled in the tying run and scored on Jason James’ sacrifice squeeze bunt as a third-inning rally gave the RiverHawks a three-game sweep of the RailCats and a 4-0 exhibition record.

The RailCats scored first in the top of the second inning, when right fielder Cristian Guerrero reached on an error committed by third baseman Jake Eigsti. After a sacrifice bunt from designated hitter Zach Rodeghero, Guerrero scored on Yuki Matsumoto’s single to give Gary a 1-0 lead. The unearned run was the only run allowed by Rockford pitching. Starter Kyle Ruwe combined with relievers Roger Lincoln, Brett Durand, and Brandon Todd for zero earned runs and just three hits allowed in ten innings. Ruwe held the RailCats to a hit over three innings for the win.

In the third inning, David Cooper took a one-out walk and scored on House’s triple to dead center field. James’ sacrifice squeeze to first base drove in House to give the ‘Hawks a 2-1 lead.

After the next hitter, Rich Austin, reached on an error, Gary starter Brandon Magee and relievers Aaron Cook, Zeb Engle and Brian Henschell combined to retire 16 straight RiverHawks until Ron Perodin led off the bottom of the ninth with an infield single.

The teams scheduled a 10-inning game, and it was in the two extra at-bats that Rockford turned the game into a blowout. In the ninth, Perodin rounded the bases on a pair of steals and a run-scoring error. The big blow was a two-run single by Elvin Millan, which gave Rockford a four-run lead. Cooper and House each drove in runs after the inning was extended by an error by third baseman Jeff Beachum. Rockford took advantage of three RailCats errors in the ninth to increase the lead to 8-1. Rockford tallied two more runs in the bottom of the tenth on RBI singles from Evan McArthur and David Cooper.

The RiverHawks are members of the Northern League, an eight-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 18th season this summer. The RiverHawks’ ninth season begins at 7:05 p.m. Thursday against the Schaumburg Flyers at Road Ranger Stadium. Advertising and ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255.
