RiverHawks sign five

May 11, 2010 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks added five new faces to the clubhouse on Tuesday.

Rockford’s only professional baseball team has signed catchers Adam Shorsher, Elvin Millan and B.J. Underkofler, outfielder Kevin House and pitcher Jon Huizinga.

Shorsher is a ninth-year pro who hit .224 with two home runs and seven RBI in 19 games with Lancaster of the independent Atlantic League last year. The San Diego Padres took Shorsher out of San Jose State with their sixth-round pick in the 2002 draft.

Millan, a student assistant coach at Missouri Baptist University, has no prior professional experience. The most recent year on record, 2007, he hit .313 with two home runs and 18 RBI for Florida A&M University.

Underkofler hit .220 with no home runs and 11 RBI for Chico of the independent Golden League last year.

House is a longtime indy leaguer. In November, the Joliet Jackhammers picked him up in a four-player deal with the Edmonton Cracker Cats of the independent Golden League. House hit .316 with three home runs and 18 RBI and stole 10 bases in 55 games for Edmonton last year. House was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals out of the University of Memphis in the 11th round in 2003. He spent portions of two seasons in affiliated ball. He has also played for five indy teams, including Windy City, Gateway and Southern Illinois in the Frontier League, and Schaumburg in the Northern League. House, a veteran of six professional seasons, is a .257 career hitter.

Huizinga had no record, no saves and a 7.36 ERA in six combined appearances between the Northern League’s Winnipeg and Schaumburg teams. He is a former Milwaukee farmhand.

The RiverHawks are members of the Northern League, an eight-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 18th season this summer.
