13-year-old Daleo gives early commitment to NIU

April 12, 2010 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – On Wednesday, the Northern Illinois University Huskies play Northwestern University at Road Ranger Stadium, which happens to be the home of the Rockford RiverHawks. But while coach Ed Mathey has his sights set on leaving his mark at the home of the RiverHawks, he also has his sights set on his recruiting class of 2015 and another type of RiverHawk.

Satchel Daleo, a 13-year-old outfielder who plays for the Junior RiverHawks, has verbally committed to play for the Huskies when he gets to college. Daleo’s current club is sponsored by the professional team, and wears identical uniforms.

Satchel’s father, Chris Daleo, spoke to Mathey by phone Friday. The coach told him he’d like to have the boy make a verbal commitment to come to NIU. The boy’s answer, according to his father, was “Absolutely.”

"Ed saw him play during fall ball last year and then Satchel was invited to participate in a showcase held at NIU, where he performed well," Chris Daleo said. "We are very excited. It is Satchel’s dream to play college baseball. We respect Coach Mathey and his program at NIU and this is very exciting news for our family."

NCAA rules prohibit coaches and school officials from speaking publicly about unsigned prospects.

"Satchel continues to show progression with the contact points of his swing,” RiverHawks player-coach Rich Austin said. “He displays a strong work ethic and absorbs things very well.”

Austin, Satchel Daleo’s hitting coach, is helping the young prospect prepare not only for his season but also for the Chicagoland Elite Showcase, the USA National team tryouts and a tournament to be held in Aruba in the fall. Daleo previously represented the Great Lakes Region, made up of players from six states, at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C., in the National Team Identification Series last September. He also spent his Christmas break representing the United States in the Dominican Republic.

You can watch NIU play Northwestern at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Road Ranger Stadium. Tickets can be purchased by calling the RiverHawks box office at 815-885-2255.

The RiverHawks are members of the Northern League, an eight-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 18th season in 2010. The RiverHawks’ ninth season begins at 7:05 p.m. May 20 against the Schaumburg Flyers at Road Ranger Stadium. Advertising and ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Games are broadcast live on ESPN 1380 (WTJK-AM) and on ESPN1380.com. Fans can also visit the RiverHawks online at www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
