February 23, 2010 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – A former San Francisco farmhand is coming in to handle the hot corner for the Rockford RiverHawks.
Rockford’s only professional baseball team announced on Tuesday that it has signed third baseman Evan McArthur. McArthur, an 11th-round draft pick by the Giants in 2007, has played only one season of pro ball because of injuries.
“He’s had a couple of injuries that have limited his playing time in affiliated baseball,” RiverHawks co-owner and director of baseball operations Dave Ciarrachi said. “To be drafted as high as he was, he has to have good skill levels.”
McArthur’s professional experience consists of a combined 30 games last season between the Giants’ short-season Class A and rookie-level affiliates. McArthur batted .147 without an RBI in 10 games with Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in the Northwest League. He hit .213 with no home runs and seven RBI in 20 games with the Scottsdale Giants in the Arizona League.
McArthur has suffered shoulder ailments in both pro and amateur ball. After he was drafted, he suffered a labrum tear. He was redshirted at Cal State-Fullerton in 2004 after shoulder surgery.
Ciarrachi said, thanks to the experienced hitters he has signed this winter, he has room for a defense-first third baseman and that McArthur’s college coaches considered him one of the finest the Titans have ever produced. In McArthur’s senior season, 2007, he hit .247 with four homers and 31 RBI in 48 games, but he committed just 11 errors that spring. Last year in affiliated ball, he committed just one error.
The RiverHawks are members of the Northern League, an eight-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 18th season in 2010.
