RiverHawks add another ex-Skyhawk

February 17, 2010 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Kyle Ruwe will reunite with several teammates when he reports to spring training in May at Road Ranger Stadium.

The Rockford RiverHawks announced on Wednesday that they have acquired the right-handed pitcher from the Sussex Skyhawks of the independent Can-Am League in exchange for cash. This winter, Rockford’s only professional baseball team has traded for or signed four players who were with the Skyhawks in 2009 – Ruwe and fellow pitchers Roger Lincoln and Justin Knoff, along with center fielder Ron Perodin.

In independent baseball, where most teams play less than 100 games and most starting pitchers average around 20 starts, Ruwe is a rare three-time 10-game winner. In 2006-08, Ruwe hit double digits in wins each year, including a career-best 12-6 record for Sussex two years ago.

Last season, Ruwe was 8-7 with a career-high 4.77 earned-run average, but he walked just 38 in 117 innings.

“He’s a pitch-to-contact guy,” RiverHawks co-owner and director of baseball operations Dave Ciarrachi said. “With (Kyle) Wright and (Brett) Durand, Knoff, Ruwe and Lincoln, we’ve got a good rotation.”

Ruwe, who turns 27 on Saturday, has spent his entire five-year professional career in indy ball. He has a 46-24 career record with a 4.35 ERA.

The RiverHawks are members of the Northern League, an eight-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 18th season in 2010. The RiverHawks’ ninth season begins at 7:05 p.m. May 20 against the Schaumburg Flyers at Road Ranger Stadium. Advertising and ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Games are broadcast live on ESPN 1380 (WTJK-AM) and the internet. Fans can also visit the RiverHawks online at www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
