Florence finishes sweep, 8-3

August 23, 2009 - FLORENCE, Ky. – Florence scored five times in the bottom of the first inning and went on to beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 8-3, on Sunday.

Leadoff hitter Tim Grogan was 3-for-4 with a home run, double and two RBI as the Freedom completed a three-game series sweep and sent the RiverHawks to their fifth loss in a row. Rockford dropped eight of 12 over its last four series, interdivision matchups with sub-.500 Washington and Florence. The RiverHawks are 40-43 with 13 games left.

Grogan led off the first inning with a double to the corner in left field. After Rockford starter Jay Monti walked Ryan Basham, Billy Mottram hit a grounder underneath the glove of first baseman Ross McCoy for a run-scoring error. Justin Pickett singled in a run. Monti then walked Erold Andrus and threw a run-scoring wild pitch. Two run-scoring groundouts gave the Freedom a 5-0 lead. Grogan lined a home run to right in the second inning.

Doug Sanders got Rockford on the board with a home run to left field in the third inning. Sanders was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Florence starter Chuck Tiffany (4-6) gave up a run on four hits over six innings for the win. Monti (7-7) lost for the first time in five starts. He gave up six runs, four earned, on five hits over six innings.

The RiverHawks come home Tuesday for a six-game homestand. They play River City at 7:05 p.m. on a Two-For Tuesday. Tickets and hot dogs are each 2-for-1.
