August 21, 2009 - FLORENCE, Ky. – Two bases-loaded opportunities and a complete game from a pitcher in his Frontier League debut. That formula didn’t turn into a win for the Rockford RiverHawks on Friday.

The Florence Freedom beat the RiverHawks, 4-2, to drop Rockford a game under .500. The RiverHawks, at 40-41, have lost three in a row.

The RiverHawks stranded 12 runners, eight in scoring position, and left the bases loaded without a run to show for it in the third and sixth innings.

Mikael Ryder, acquired from Chico of the Golden League on Monday, took the loss in his Frontier League debut. Ryder (above, file) struck out seven, walked one. Ryder gave up seven hits, four in Florence’s three-run third inning. Jay Johnson led off with a single and John Welch followed with his 12th home run of the season. Matt Stiffler and Tim Grogan singled and Ryan Basham walked to load the bases. Justin Pickett hit a sacrifice fly to give the Freedom a 3-0 lead. Grogan singled in an insurance run in the seventh inning.

The RiverHawks scored in the fourth inning when Alex Bardeguez hit a two-out shot off the foot of Florence starter Preston Vancil to drive in Derrick Walker from third base. They added a run in the ninth on an errant pickoff throw by Florence closer Jonathan Miller.

Vancil (5-2) left with the bases full and two outs in the sixth inning. John Tessyman preserved the lead with a groundout. Miller got the final two outs for his 10th save.

The series continues at 5:05 p.m. CDT Saturday. The game is not scheduled for local broadcast.

The RiverHawks come home Aug. 25 for a six-game homestand. They play River City at 7:05 p.m. on a Two-For Tuesday. Tickets and hot dogs are each 2-for-1.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 17th season. Advertising and ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255.
