August 20, 2009 - Former Rockford RiverHawk Rich Austin is a champion once again.
The veteran of Rockford’s 2004 Frontier League champion had a monster series this week as Bologna upset San Marino in the Italian finals. Austin (rear, second from right) hit a home run and was 4-for-5 with five RBI on Thursday as Bologna won, 16-2, and finished a 4-wins-to-1 victory in Serie A, the Italian professional league.
In the championship round, Austin hit .471 with two homers and seven RBI. His on-base percentage was .600 and his On-base-plus-slugging was 1.541.
Austin won his third pennant in six years. He was with Fargo-Moorhead when the RedHawks won the independent Northern League title in 2006.
Austin was the Frontier League Player of the Year in 2004. He set the RiverHawks’ all-time home record in three years with Rockford. Jason James tied the record on Tuesday with his 32nd career home run.
