Mazurek perfect at plate in RiverHawks’ 10-1 win

August 16, 2009 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Matt Mazurek set the table for the Rockford RiverHawks’ Sunday feast.

The leadoff hitter reached base in all five plate appearances and scored four runs as the RiverHawks blew out Florence, 10-1. Mazurek was 3-for-3 with his fourth home run of the year and two walks to break out of a 5-for-36 slump.

Jason James, Derrick Walker and Ross McCoy also homered for the RiverHawks, in front of 2,387 at Road Ranger Stadium. Brett Durand pitched a four-hitter for the win.

Mazurek’s leadoff walks in the first and third innings helped the RiverHawks stake an early 4-0 lead off Florence starter Preston Vancil. In the first inning, Robert Sabates drove in Mazurek on a fielder’s choice. In the third, Mazurek stole second base and scored on Doug Sanders’ triple to right-center field. James drilled a 1-0 fastball from Vancil over the fence in right-center for his 11th home run of the season.

James’ two-run shot leaves him one short of Rich Austin’s all-time RiverHawks record of 32 home runs.

The RiverHawks knocked out Vancil (4-2) with a three-run fourth inning. Ross McCoy led off with a double and later scored from third base on Jono Brooks’ squeeze bunt. Brooks went to third on Mazurek’s hit-and-run single. Brooks scored when the two pulled off a delayed double steal and Mazurek crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Durand (8-5) struck out nine and walked one. He retired 14 in a row from the third through eighth innings and lost the shutout on Matt Stiffler’s two-out RBI double in the eighth.

The RiverHawks are off on Monday and head east for a six-game road trip to Washington and Florence. The RiverHawks open the series in Washington at 6:05 p.m. CDT Tuesday. The RiverHawks come back Aug. 25 for a six-game homestand. They play River City at 7:05 p.m. on a Two-For Tuesday. Tickets and hot dogs are each 2-for-1.
