RiverHawks sweep Rascals

August 2, 2009 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Brett Durand and Kyle Wright each pitched complete-game victories on Saturday as the Rockford RiverHawks swept a doubleheader from the River City Rascals.

Durand pitched his first career shutout and beat the Rascals, 3-0, in the opener. In the nightcap, Wright beat the Rascals, 6-1, to win his ninth straight decision.

Rockford right fielder Derrick Walker had four hits, including a home run, in the doubleheader, in front of a near-sellout crowd of 3,004 at Road Ranger Stadium, and extended his hitting streak to seven games.

In the opener, Durand (7-3) struck out eight and walked two. He has won each of his last three decisions.

The RiverHawks scored twice in the bottom of the first inning, on RBI singles to left field by Robert Sabates and Alex Bardeguez. Doug Sanders added a RBI single in the third inning.

Chris Ingoglia (5-7) gave up three runs on nine hits over five innings and took the loss.

In the nightcap, Wright (9-1) scattered six hits, including a fifth-inning home run by Danny Sawyer, and struck out eight without a walk. Wright tied the RiverHawks’ single-season record, set in 2002 by Bryan Batthauer and Jason Shelley, with his fifth complete game of the year.

Walker broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the first inning. Rockford scored three runs in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 6-1. Walker and Jason James hit back-to-back RBI singles with one out. Walker later scored on a passed ball.

Josh Lowey (5-2) gave up five runs, four earned, on nine hits over five innings and took the loss.

The series continues at 4:05 p.m. Sunday. It’s Family Day and Dr Pepper/Q98.5/WREX Player Mugshot Night. The first 1,000 fans receive a mugshot of a player, courtsey of Dr Pepper, Q98.5 and WREX. Kids get to run the bases after the game. The player will sign autographs following the game.
