Otters sweep doubleheader from RiverHawks
« Back

July 31, 2009 - EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Rookie pitching contained Rockford hitting on Friday as Evansville swept the RiverHawks, 2-1 and 6-5, in a doubleheader at Bosse Field.

In the opener, John Ducey struck out 10 batters and scattered three hits. In the nightcap, Kyle Dahman held the RiverHawks to a single hit – a Jono Brooks home run – over five innings and struck out eight as the Otters combined to five-hit Rockford.

The RiverHawks, at 30-31, slipped below the .500 mark for the first time in nearly a month.

Pinch-hitter Frank Meade hit a walkoff two-run single with two outs in the seventh inning to give the Otters the win in the second game.

Rockford itself had been down to its last out just minutes earlier. The RiverHawks scored three two-out runs in the top of the seventh – on Caleb Fields’ pinch-hit RBI single, Derrick Walker’s RBI single and Jason James’ go-ahead RBI double – to take a 5-4 lead. Evansville closer Justin Smith (3-2), who had earned the save in the opener, blew the lead in the nightcap, but ended up with the win.

In the bottom of the seventh, Rockford reliever Elliott Cribby (1-1) gave up a single to Javy Brown and walked Luke Hetherington, both with one out. With two outs, Matt Schneider walked to load the bases and Meade lined the winning hit into center field.

Evansville never trailed in the opener. Ducey (2-6) went six innings and gave up Rockford’s lone run on a third-inning wild pitch. Rockford starter Mike Rogers (1-5) pitched into the sixth inning, struck out six and held the Otters to six hits, but he walked four. Rogers walked the leadoff hitter in three innings.

In the fourth, Evansville broke a 2-1 tie when Greg Alexander led off with a walk, stole second base and scored on Cameron Satterwhite’s single to left.
