July 30, 2009 - EVANSVILLE, Ind. – “Late Night with Alex Bardeguez” turned out to be a hit for the Rockford RiverHawks.

The new third baseman, signed Sunday night, turned in a 2-for-4 performance as the RiverHawks beat the Evansville Otters, 5-3, in a late-night game at Bosse Field. Bardeguez broke a tie game with a two-out RBI single in the fourth inning and hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

The game, scheduled for a 10:35 p.m. Wednesday start, didn’t end until 1:47 a.m. Thursday.

Rockford closer John Muller made the first pitching start of his life and turned in four solid innings. He held the Otters to two runs in the first inning, on a Luke Hetherington RBI double and a Frank Meade sacrifice fly. Muller struck out five, walked one and left with a 3-2, but left before he had reached the minimum five innings needed for a win.

Fabian Gomez (2-2) gave up a run on three hits over 3 1/3 innings and was awarded the win. After the first two batters he faced reached base, Gomez retired nine in a row. He left after Tyler Diamond blooped a RBI single into right field with one out in the eighth. Elliott Cribby retired the final five batters in order to record his second save.

Evansville starter Kai Tuomi (1-6) gave up five runs on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings. He also gave up a game-tying home run to Jono Brooks in the second inning.

The teams play again at 7:05 p.m. Thursday.
