Rascals rally to beat RiverHawks, 10-7

July 26, 2009 - O’FALLON, Mo. – River City rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on Sunday and beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 10-7.

The Rascals maintained a half-game lead on Windy City in the Frontier League West. The ThunderBolts beat Evansville, 6-4. The fourth-place RiverHawks have lost six of nine since the Frontier League All-Star break and are four games back.

The Rascals scored three times with three straight two-out hits in the eighth off Rockford reliever Slava Vasilyev (0-1). Scott Houin extended the inning with a single, Chad Maddox doubled to left field to drive in the go-ahead run and both scored on Scott Robinson’s double to right.

Jono Brooks hit his fourth home run of the year for the RiverHawks. Chad Maddox, Chris Colton and Joe Billick all homered for the Rascals.

The game featured seven lead changes or ties. Brooks’ homer in the third inning tied the game at 2-2 and the RiverHawks took the lead an inning later on Ross McCoy’s RBI single. Colton and Billick homered in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead.

Rockford leadoff man Matt Mazurek was 3-for-4. His RBI single in the seventh inning tied the game at 7-7. Brandon Cohen was 1-for-4 with a RBI to extend his career-best hitting streak to 12 games.

Brent Solich (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win. Jason Lowey pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 14th save.

The teams play again at 7:05 p.m. Monday.

The RiverHawks will be back at Road Ranger Stadium at 6:05 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1 to play River City on American/Rock Valley College/Rockford Health Systems Blue Out Night.
