June 30, 2009 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Brett Durand struck out a career-high 10 on Tuesday to pitch the Rockford RiverHawks to a 5-4 win over the Gateway Grizzlies.
It was a good night all around for the Rockford battery. Catcher Ben Blumenthal hit a two-run homer. Designated hitter Robert Sabates, the team’s backup catcher, also homered. Closer John Muller came back the day after a walkoff loss and picked up the save.
Rockford built a 5-0 lead over the first five innings. Sabates drove in a run on a force play in the first inning. Blumenthal homered to center field in the second and Sabates homered with a man aboard in the fifth.
Durand (4-2) gave up seven hits and walked one over seven innings. He took a shutout into the seventh, when Gateway rallied for four runs. Stephen Holdren and Charlie Lisk hit back-to-back homers off Durand for the second time this season – Holdren’s came with a man on. Jon Quigley doubled in a run with two out to cut Rockford’s lead to a run.
The Rockford bullpen pitched two innings of hitless relief. Muller, who gave up the winning run in the RiverHawks’ 10-inning, 4-3 loss on Monday at Windy City, walked one but pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his eighth save.
Gateway starter Tom Vesely (0-2) gave up five hits and walked four over five innings.
The series continues at 12:05 p.m. Wednesday. It’s the annual Big Splash Spectacular, when the stadium turns into a water park.
