RiverHawks lose, 4-3, in extra innings

June 29, 2009 - CRESTWOOD, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks have been frequent walkoff victims lately.

Windy City rallied from a three-run deficit on Monday afternoon to beat the RiverHawks, 4-3, in 10 innings. Nate Hall doubled in the tying run with two outs in the eighth inning and drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the 10th.

The RiverHawks suffered their third walkoff loss of their last 10 games and fifth of the season. The ThunderBolts swept the two-game series.

Rockford scored in each of the first three innings to build a 3-0 lead. Robert Sabates singled home a two-out run in the first inning. The RiverHawks scored an unearned run in the second and got a RBI single from Ross McCoy in the third.

The ThunderBolts rallied to tie the game on a two-out, two-run single from Guillermo Martinez in the sixth inning and Hall’s RBI double in the eighth.

In the bottom of the tenth, the ‘Bolts loaded the bases with one out. Rockford closer John Muller walked J.T. Restko. Zach Aakhus singled to right. Damian Walcott’s bunt stayed on the first-base foul line for a single. Hall followed with his game-winning fly to left.

Muller (0-3) lost a walkoff decision for the second time in four games. Brandon Garner (1-0) got one out in the top of the 10th and won in relief. Rockford left runners in scoring position in each of the last three innings.

Jason James was 1-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 26 games, the longest in the Frontier League this season.

The RiverHawks come home for a three-game series against Gateway at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday. They open the homestand with a Two-For Tuesday. Tickets are two for the price of one, and so are hot dogs.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 17th season.
