Grizzlies walk off with 6-5 win
« Back

June 19, 2009 - SAUGET, Ill. – Former RiverHawk Stephen Holdren scored the winning run on a 10th-inning error as the Gateway Grizzlies beat Rockford, 6-5, on Friday.

Gateway loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 10th. Rockford closer John Muller hit Holdren, gave up a single to Charlie Lisk and walked Joe Scaperotta. Rockford moved right fielder Ross McCoy in to create a five-man, drawn-in infield. Gateway’s Chad Rothford hit a ball off the glove of third baseman Aaron Cone as Holdren scored.

Holdren and Rothford homered for the Grizzlies, who have won the first two games of the three-game series. Jason James homered for the RiverHawks and was 3-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 17 games.

Rockford took an early 5-3 lead with a four-run second inning and James’ first-pitch homer to left field in the third. Rothford tied the game with a two-run shot to right field in the fourth.

Rockford loaded the bases with nobody out in the 10th, but John Maschino (2-1) struck out the next three hitters. Muller (0-1) entered with the bases full and two outs in the eighth, got the RiverHawks out of that jam and had struck out four before the Grizzlies rallied in the 10th.

The series finale is at 7:05 p.m. Saturday. The game is not scheduled for local broadcast.

The RiverHawks return home for a three-game series against Evansville at 4:05 p.m. Sunday as the RiverHawks celebrate Father’s Day. The first 1,000 receive a RiverHawks logo baseball, great for autographs or for catch. Before the game, fathers and kids can play catch on the field. After the game, players will also autograph balls. Don't forget the early start times for Sunday games this year. As always, kids get to run the bases following Sunday games. Sponsored by OSF, Q98.5, and Fox 39.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 17th season.
