Crushers complete sweep with 9-4 win

June 7, 2009 - AVON, Ohio – Gordon Gronkowski homered and two Lake Erie pitchers combined on a four-hitter Sunday as the Crushers beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 9-4.

The Crushers completed a sweep of the six-game season series. The RiverHawks have lost 11 of their last 13 games.

Lake Erie took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on sacrifice fly by Nick Maragas and a two-out RBI ground-rule double by Drew Saylor. Saylor was 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. The Crushers turned the game into a rout with a five-run fourth inning. Gronkowski hit a three-run homer to center field to knock out Rockford starter Mike Rogers (0-2). The Crushers added two runs in the fifth inning for a 9-0 lead.

Robert Sabates
broke the shutout with his first home run of the year, a two-out grand slam to left field in the seventh inning.

Lake Erie starter Paul Fagan (3-0) gave up four hits over seven innings and earned the win.

The RiverHawks return home on Tuesday, June 9 for a six-game homestand. It starts with a 7:05 p.m. game against Windy City. It’s Faith Night, when area churches and religious groups are invited to attend the game, courtesy of an anonymous donor. In addition, it’s a Two-For Tuesday, when hot dogs are two for the price of one.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 17th season this summer. The RiverHawks play their home opener at 7:05 p.m. May 26 against the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti. The RiverHawks host the 2009 Frontier League All-Star Game at 7:05 p.m. on July 15.
