James hits milestone in 8-5 win

June 4, 2009 - YPSILANTI, Mich. – Jason James had three hits and drove in three runs as the Rockford RiverHawks rallied twice to beat the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti, 8-5, on Thursday.

James became the third player in team history with 300 career hits. Two of Thursday’s hits put Rockford in front. James broke a 2-2 tie with a fifth-inning sacrifice fly and snapped a 4-4 tie in the ninth with a single to center field. James has 301 hits, 10 short of Ben Fjelland’s career record.

Ben Blumenthal and Matt Mazurek hit home runs for Rockford, which has won two in a row. Jimmy Baker homered for the Sliders.

Rockford erased a 2-0 deficit with a three-run fifth. Blumenthal tied the game with a two-run homer to left. The next three batters reached on errors and James drove in the go-ahead run with a fly to right. His 300th hit was a two-out RBI double in the seventh inning.

The RiverHawks took the lead for good with a four-run ninth inning off Ypsilanti closer Earl Oakes (0-1) . After James singled in the go-ahead run, Mazurek hit a three-run homer to right-center.

The Sliders rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth, but Rockford closer John Muller came on to get the last three outs and earned his fourth save. Starter Brett Durand (2-0) gave up 10 hits over eight innings, but struck out six without a walk.

The RiverHawks play at Lake Erie at 6:05 p.m. CDT Friday.

The RiverHawks return home on Tuesday, June 9 for a six-game homestand. It starts with a 7:05 p.m. game against Windy City. It’s Faith Night, when area churches and religious groups are invited to attend the game, courtesy of an anonymous donor. In addition, it’s a Two-For Tuesday, when hot dogs are two for the price of one.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 17th season this summer. The RiverHawks play their home opener at 7:05 p.m. May 26 against the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti. The RiverHawks host the 2009 Frontier League All-Star Game at 7:05 p.m. on July 15.
