June 2, 2009 - YPSILANTI, Mich. – Roberto Mena hit two RBI doubles, including a walkoff two-bagger in the bottom of the ninth, as the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 3-2, on Tuesday.
The RiverHawks have lost eight in a row, matching the longest losing streak in team history. The RiverHawks lost eight straight July 28-August 5, 2003.
The RiverHawks wasted a strong start from Mike Rogers. The veteran right-hander left with a 2-0 lead after a leadoff walk in the seventh inning. In the seventh, Mena doubled in a run and the Sliders tied the game on a run-scoring force play. Rogers, who received a no-decision, scattered two hits, walked two and struck out four.
In the bottom of the ninth, Rockford reliever Marcus McKenzie (0-2) struck out leadoff hitter Ralph Rosas, but catcher Robert Sabates could not hold onto the ball. Sabates committed a throwing error as he tried to complete the strikeout. After a sacrifice moved Rosas into scoring position and Rockford went to closer John Muller, Mena doubled home the winning run.
Jonathan Haldis (1-1) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win in relief.
Rockford built its lead on a first-inning RBI single by Jason James and a fifth-inning sacrifice fly by Scott Simon.
The three-game series continues at 6:05 p.m. CDT Wednesday.
