May 20, 2009 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – New faces aplenty are featured on the Rockford RiverHawks’ 2009 roster.

The RiverHawks announced on Wednesday their 24-man roster, which includes 18 players who have never before played for Rockford. Just three players, two-time Frontier League All-Star outfielder Jason James, shortstop Jono Brooks (above) and pitcher Matt Enderle, were on last year’s opening-night roster. The season starts at 7:05 p.m. Thursday at two-time defending champion Windy City.

The RiverHawks finished last season 48-48, fourth in the West Division, and missed the playoffs for the first time in five years.

“We’ve looked hard to try to build a better club to make the playoffs and the results will have to be proven on the field, but we like what we’ve seen so far,” RiverHawks owner and director of baseball operations Dave Ciarrachi said.

Other returning faces include corner infielder Robbie Knapp, catcher Robert Sabates and relievers Marcus McKenzie and Kyffin Marcum, who all joined the team midseason last year.

The rotation features all-new players, including former Oakland farmhand Mike Rogers. Rogers will start both the season opener Thursday against the ThunderBolts’ Ross Stout and the home opener on May 26 against Midwest. Fellow starters Kyle Wright, Brett Durand and Rob Neigebauer have also all had affiliated experience.

Key additions to the lineup include first baseman Scott Simon, the all-time hits leader at Northern Illinois University, and outfielder Mike Goetz, who began last year in the Frontier League with Traverse City and was signed midyear by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 17th season this summer. The RiverHawks will begin their eighth season at 7:05 p.m. May 21 at Windy City and play their home opener at 7:05 p.m. May 26 against the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti. The RiverHawks host the 2009 Frontier League All-Star Game at 7:05 p.m. on July 15. Advertising and season-ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255.
