McCoy homers as RiverHawks win exhibition, 6-4

May 10, 2009 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – New RiverHawk Ross McCoy hit an 11th-inning home run on Sunday as Rockford beat the Gary RailCats, 6-4, in an interleague exhibition at Road Ranger Stadium.

McCoy, acquired from Reno of the Golden League in an offseason trade, was 2-for-4. He homered off losing pitcher Garret Holleran with two men aboard and one out in the 11th to drive home the tying and winning runs.

Rockford pitching combined for eight strikeouts. Mike Rogers struck out three in three scoreless innings. John Muller pitched a scoreless 11th for the win.

Robbie Knapp, a returning Frontier League All-Star, was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a RBI.

Rob Marconi hit a two-run homer for the RailCats in the first inning.

The RiverHawks, 1-2 in the preseason, play at Gary at 2 p.m. Monday.

The Rockford RiverHawks are the most highly attended minor-league baseball team in the Stateline. The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 17th season this summer. The RiverHawks will begin their eighth season at 7:05 p.m. Thursday, May 21 at Windy City and play their home opener at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, May 26 against the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti.
