RiverHawks draft two from tryout camp

May 6, 2009 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks announced Wednesday that they selected two pitchers in Tuesday’s Frontier League tryout camp draft.

The RiverHawks made two picks in the first round. At No. 5 overall, they selected former Chicago White Sox farmhand Chad Dawson. At No. 6, Rockford took former Boston College right-hander Kurt Hayer.

Dawson, 23, was drafted in the 31st round out of Indiana State last year. He was 0-1 with a 2.70 earned-run average in 10 relief appearances with Bristol of the rookie-level Appalachian League. The right-hander has Rookie-2 status in the Frontier League.

Hayer, 24, was 0-1 with an 8.40 ERA and a save in 12 relief appearances for the Eagles last spring. He has no prior pro experience.

The Rockford RiverHawks are the most highly attended minor-league baseball team in the Stateline. The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 17th season this summer. The RiverHawks will begin their eighth season at 7:05 p.m. Thursday, May 21 at Windy City and play their home opener at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, May 26 against the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti.
