Knapp to return; McTamney, Flattery to retire

February 12, 2009 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – An all-star acquisition is coming back to the Rockford RiverHawks, but two pitchers are not. The team announced today that it had picked up the 2009 option on corner infielder Robbie Knapp. Right-handers Tim Flattery and Mike McTamney have retired. Last year, Knapp hit .317, the sixth-best average in the Frontier League, with eight home runs and 57 RBI. The RiverHawks acquired Knapp from Washington last July 14 in a trade for first baseman Chris Raber. Knapp, as it turned out, switched two pairs of teams as a result of the deal. Knapp had already been picked to represent the Wild Things, members of the East Division, in the all-star game. Two days after the deal, he instead represented the RiverHawks on the West Division roster in the league’s midsummer classic. Knapp hit .335 in 43 games after the trade. The fourth-year professional is a career .305 hitter. Knapp, who turns 26 on Feb. 20, has 2-Year status in the Frontier League. The RiverHawks acquired McTamney in a July 26 trade with Sioux City of the independent American Association in exchange for a player to be named later. The veteran went 4-3 with a 4.53 earned-run average in nine Frontier League starts. He struck out 50 and walked 13 in 53 2/3 innings. Flattery spent his only professional season with the RiverHawks. He was 2-5 with a 5.84 ERA and two saves in 18 appearances. The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 17th season this summer. The RiverHawks will begin their eighth season at 7:05 p.m. May 21 at Windy City and play their home opener at 7:05 p.m. May 26 against the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti.
