February 9, 2009 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks announced Monday that they have signed three rookies.

Catcher/first baseman Jeremiah Parker and infielders Steve Crawford and Patrick Cummins, all products of NCAA Division I schools, have agreed to their first professional contracts. In addition, the RiverHawks released pitcher Peden Rucker.

Parker (above), 23, hit .300 in a four-year career at Georgia Southern. He hit .326 with 14 home runs and 70 RBI last spring for the Eagles. One of Parker’s home runs last season came last March 15, when the Eagles hit a NCAA-record 14 home runs against Columbia.

RiverHawks director of baseball operations Dave Ciarrachi said Parker, who committed just three errors last season, will likely compete for a role at first base.

Crawford (below), 22, played third base at Le Moyne College, where he hit .347 with a home run and 33 RBI and stole 16 bases last spring. Crawford, who hit .300 in all three of his seasons with the Dolphins, is in the top 10 on the school’s all-time hits, runs and steals lists.

Cummins (below), who last played college ball in 2007, hit .224 with a home run and 17 RBI for Sacramento State University that spring. He turns 24 on May 2.

Rucker was 3-3 with a 4.98 earned-run average and a save in 15 appearances for the RiverHawks last season.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 17th season this summer. The RiverHawks will begin their eighth season at 7:05 p.m. May 21 at Windy City and play their home opener at 7:05 p.m. May 26 against the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti. The RiverHawks host the 2009 Frontier League All-Star Game at 7:05 p.m. on July 15. Advertising and season-ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255.
