RiverHawks’ Mazurek to return
« Back

January 21, 2009 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Matt Mazurek became the Rockford RiverHawks’ anytime, anywhere outfielder last season. Emphasis on the anywhere - in addition to being regularly shuffled among the outfield spots, he also made 17 appearances in the infield.

The RiverHawks announced Wednesday that they have exercised their 2009 option on Mazurek, a third-year professional. Mazurek hit .271 with a home run and 30 RBI in 221 at-bats for the RiverHawks last season. He stole 16 bases in 18 attempts.

“Matt did everything we asked of him last season,” manager Bob Koopmann said. “He played all three outfield positions. The biggest thing was the point at which we asked him to play third base, which he hadn’t done since at least his college days.”

The RiverHawks spent most of last July short-handed on the left side of the infield. Infielder Brad Dutton missed time right before the all-star break because of lost contacts. Shortstop Jono Brooks was injured in a collision in the last game before the break and missed about three weeks. The resulting lineup juggling put Mazurek, who had previously had a cameo at first base, at third base for 16 games.

“He did it and got us through a time where we didn’t have a third baseman,” Koopmann said. “
… This year, we want to get him settled into a corner outfield position, whether it is left field or right field. We want to get him into a role where he’s batting everyday, against left-handers or right-handers.”

Mazurek, who turns 25 in March, has 1-Year status in the Frontier League.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 17th season this summer. The RiverHawks will begin their eighth season at 7:05 p.m. May 21 at Windy City and play their home opener at 7:05 p.m. May 26 against the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti. The RiverHawks host the 2009 Frontier League All-Star Game at 7:05 p.m. on July 15. Advertising and season-ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255.
