Austin continues international career

Former Rockford RiverHawk Rich Austin in now playing professionally in Canada after spending most of the season in Italy. Austin signed with the Calgary Vipers of the independent Golden League after Fortitudo Bologna lost in the Italian postseason.

Austin was a Triple Crown contender in Italy. His 10 home runs and 50 RBI led the league. His .366 batting average was third-best in Italy.

Austin played the last four games of the Golden League regular season and was 4-for-16 with a RBI. He's 3-for-10 with three RBI in a first-round series against Edmonton, which the Vipers lead, 2-0.

Austin spent last April with Tabasco of the Mexican League and returned to the United States to play with Fargo-Moorhead of the independent Northern League. Counting a series with Bologna at T&A San Marino, Austin has played in five different nations since the start of the 2007 season. Bologna plays in Serie A, the Italian professional league, which includes San Marino, a tiny soverign state surrounded on all sides by Italy.
