James, Anthonsen win league awards

September 2, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Rockford RiverHawks Jason James and Joe Anthonsen have been named to the Frontier League’s end-of-season all-star team.

The two teammates, locked in a fight for the batting title, were among 12 Frontier League players named to the paper all-star team. The awards were announced on Tuesday following voting by league managers, coaches, general managers and media.

It’s the second year in a row that James, an outfielder, has been selected. The former Most Valuable Player candidate is hitting a league-leading .352 with 13 home runs and 73 RBI with two games left to player.

Anthonsen, a second baseman, is hitting a career-best .350 with a team-record 132 hits, two home runs, 49 RBI and 27 steals.

Windy City first baseman Phil Hawke, hitting .313 with 22 homers and 73 RBI, was voted MVP. Southern Illinois ace Ryan Bird, 13-3 with a 2.48 ERA and 152 strikeouts, was named Most Valuable Pitcher. Rookie of the Year honors went to Kalamazoo’s Brendan Murphy, hitting .335 with 16 homers and 77 RBI. Kalamazoo’s Fran Riordan was named Manager of the Year.
