August 30, 2008 - SAUGET, Ill. – The Gateway Grizzlies launched an impressive display of power Saturday night, hitting four home runs en route to a 9-2 win over the Rockford RiverHawks.

The win moved Gateway into a three-way tie with Rockford and Traverse City for the fourth and final Frontier League playoff spot. Traverse City won 12-2 at Chillicothe earlier in the night.

The RiverHawks jumped out to an early lead in the second inning when Tony Gonzalez singled home Brad Dutton from second base.

The Grizzlies answered with an unearned run in the fourth. Mike Breyman reached on an error by RiverHawks first baseman Robbie Knapp. Breyman was the first base-runner for Gateway, as Rockford starter Mike McTamney retired the first 10 batters he faced. Breyman came around to score on an RBI double by Charlie Lisk.

Jono Brooks singled home a run two innings later, and Rockford took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth. That’s when Gateway exploded for four runs, highlighted by a Joseph Scaperotta three-run homer.

The Grizzlies then put the game away in the eighth. Willie Keene and Breyman hit back-to-back home runs off McTamney. He was lifted for Shawn Balteff, who proceeded to allow a two-run home run by Scaperotta, his second of the game. Scaperotta ended the night with five RBI.

McTamney (4-2) lasted seven-plus innings, allowing seven runs, six of them earned.

Gateway starter Justin Lilly (7-4) fell two outs short of his first complete game of the season. He did not allow an earned run.

The RiverHawks and Grizzlies will wrap up their three-game series tomorrow night at GCS Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05.
