RiverHawks win seventh straight, 9-3

August 27, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Joe Anthonsen played the role of table setter to perfection on Wednesday.

The Rockford leadoff hitter reached base in all five plate appearances and scored twice as the RiverHawks beat Evansville, 9-3, at Road Ranger Stadium. Rookie Mat Wilson scattered four hits and pitched into the eighth inning as the RiverHawks won their seventh game in a row.

The RiverHawks maintained a one-game lead for the final Frontier League playoff spot with seven games left. Traverse City beat Florence, 2-1, to stay a game back. Gateway lost, 4-3, at River City and is two games out.

Anthonsen was 2-for-2 with two walks and was hit by a pitch. He tied teammate Jason James for the league hits lead at 127. Anthonsen and James, who was 0-for-5, are each 17 hits away from the league record.

Rockford scored five times in the first inning. Anthonsen led off with a walk and scored on a Jono Brooks triple. James drove in Brooks on a groundout. Brad Dutton singled to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and
Tony Gonzalez followed with a base hit. Robbie Knapp doubled home Dutton, Gonzalez scored on a groundout by Brandon Cohen and Knapp crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Tom Thornton.

Thornton (1-1) gave up three more runs in the third and took the loss.

Wilson gave up four hits over 7 1/3 innings for his first professional win. Wilson (1-2) struck out four, walked six and threw a run-scoring wild pitch in the third inning. He left in the eighth with the RiverHawks leading, 8-1.

The RiverHawks’ home finale is at 7:05 p.m. Thursday. It’s the annual Fan Appreciation Night, with postgame fireworks sponsored by Wheels by RT. Miller Lite and 104.9 – the X sponsor the final Dollar Beer Night. It’s also the season’s final Military Appreciation Night.
