Barganier hits walkoff homer; 'Hawks lose, 5-4

August 15, 2008 - O’FALLON, Mo. – When the Rockford RiverHawks travel to River City, they might as well check in at the Heartbreak Hotel.

Luke Barganier hit a two-run walkoff home run on Friday as the Rascals beat the RiverHawks, 5-4. River City has won all four meetings at T.R. Hughes Ballpark, including a three-game sweep in May, by a run each night. The RiverHawks have suffered walkoff defeats in three of those four losses.

Robbie Knapp and Jono Brooks homered in a losing effort for Rockford. Brooks led off the eighth inning with a home run to left field and sparked a three-run rally that gave Rockford a 4-2 lead. Knapp drove in a run with a broken-bat infield single and scored on Brandon Cohen’s RBI groundout.

The Rascals got a run back in the bottom of the eighth when Greg Stone walked with the bases loaded.

Rockford pitching walked the leadoff hitter in four innings and three times the runner came around to score. Rockford closer James Cramphin (3-4) blew a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth. He walked leadoff hitter Brad Hough, who had hit a walkoff homer and a walkoff single in consecutive extra-inning victories over Rockford in May. Barganier hit the first pitch from Cramphin to the alley in right and right out of the stadium.

Pat Evers (2-0) won in relief.

The series continues at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
