August 12, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Joey Metropoulos continued his season-long dominance of Rockford pitching on Tuesday.
The Southern Illinois right fielder hit two home runs and the Miners totaled seven homers in a 15-5 blowout of the RiverHawks at Road Ranger Stadium. Metropoulos has 18 home runs this season, six of them in 10 games against Rockford.
Tim Dorn also hit two home runs, his 19th and 20th.
Five batters into Monday’s game, the Miners had hit three home runs and had a 5-0 lead. Rockford starter Mike McTamney (1-1) lasted just four hits before he left because of an apparent injury. Eric Suttle led off the game with a walk, Tony Roth homered to left field, Brad Miller walked and Metropoulos hit a moon shot to left-center. Dorn greeted reliever Peden Rucker with a home run to left.
Carlos Rivera got Rockford on the board with RBI doubles in the first and third innings.
The Miners turned the game into a blowout in the middle innings. In the fifth, Suttle led off with a homer to left and Metropoulos capped a four-run inning with another two-run homer. In the sixth, the Miners scored four runs, three on another Dorn homer.
Kevin Koski homered to right in the seventh inning to make it 15-2.
Southern Illinois starter Brett Scarpetta (7-2) went six innings for the win. The Rockton Hononegah alumnus has beaten Rockford twice in two starts this season. Jeremy Dow completed the game for a three-inning save.
The series continues at 7:05 p.m. on a Wrapped Up In Reading Wednesday, sponsored by Applebee’s and New Vision Laser Center. The annual Doctor-Lawyer Game is scheduled for 3:35 p.m. Fans can purchase one ticket for both games.
