August 10, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The only thing keeping Frontier League pitchers safe from Jono Brooks right now is the fact that Monday is an off day.

On Sunday, Brooks homered for the third time in the last six games as the Rockford RiverHawks beat the Midwest Sliders, 10-3. Brooks hit his seventh home run of the season and drove in four runs, in front of 2,184 at Road Ranger Stadium. Rockford starter Garrett Bauer recorded his third career 10-strikeout game to get the decision and moved a victory away from the team’s all-time wins record.

Rockford moved to within a game of the final playoff spot with the win and Gateway’s 7-3 loss at Kalamazoo. The RiverHawks are tied in the wild-card race with Traverse City, which beat Evansville, 4-1.

Bauer (9-4) gave up a home run to Zach Pace in the third inning and two unearned runs in the fifth in a five-hit, eight-inning performance. Bauer struck out the side in the second inning. He struck out 10 and walked six, which matched a season worst.

Bauer, who has won 22 times in a Rockford uniform, can tie Tanner Watson’s career record in his next start.

Rockford never trailed. Brooks homered off Midwest starter Matt Dahlen with two on and two outs in the second inning. In Rockford’s four-run fourth inning, Brooks made it 4-0 with a RBI single. With two outs, Carlos Rivera singled in two and scored on Jason James’ triple.

Dahlen (0-2) gave up three more runs in the seventh inning. Thanks to four Midwest errors, just four of the 10 runs were earned.

The RiverHawks are off on Monday. They play West Division leader Southern Illinois at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday. The Saturn of Rockford Youth Clinic is scheduled for 5 p.m.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 16th season. Advertising and ticket information is available by calling the box office at (815) 885-2255. Most games are broadcast live on WNTA (1330 AM) and the internet.
