August 2, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – After using seven pitchers in Friday night’s ball game, the Rockford RiverHawks hoped to get a long start out of Garrett Bauer. The Rockford left-hander gave them exactly that, allowing only one unearned run and three hits over eight innings of work, as the RiverHawks emerged with a 2-1 victory over the Midwest Sliders.

The RiverHawks scored first in the bottom of the second inning, when with two outs Mike Scripture brought Brad Dutton home with a single. The ‘Hawks scored again in the next inning on an RBI groundout, this time by Robert Sabates, which brought Joe Anthonsen across the dish.

Bauer held Midwest scoreless until the top of the seventh inning. With two runners on base, Sean Snell hit a ground ball that Anthonsen picked up and threw to Jono Brooks covering second base to get Dom Lombardi out. Brooks’ relay throw went past Robbie Knapp at first base, which caused Sam Deluca to come home from third. Bauer shut down the Sliders in the eighth inning, and James Cramphin only allowed one base runner in the top of the ninth as he picked up the save.

Bauer (7-4) picked up the win for the RiverHawks, striking out eight batters in eight innings of work, allowing only one unearned run on three base hits. Midwest starter Kyle Kearcher (5-4) also went eight innings, matching Bauer’s strikeout total, but gave up two runs on eleven hits, and he took the loss. Cramphin pitched the top of the ninth inning for the RiverHawks, giving up one base hit, closing out the ball game for Rockford, and tallying his fifth save of the year. With the win, the RiverHawks got their second straight victory, while handing the Sliders their third straight defeat.

The Sliders and RiverHawks take the field for a Sunday night contest at Road Ranger Stadium. Midwest right-hander Ryan MacFarlane (2-2, 2.34) will take the mound against the Rockford starter, who has yet to be determined. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Road Ranger Stadium.
