August 1, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Washington Wild Things won a marathon on the shortest of base hits.

Brett Grandstrand’s squeeze-bunt single in the top of the 12th inning brought home the go-ahead run on Thursday as Washington beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 10-8, in extra innings.

The 5-hour, 11-minute contest, played in front of 2,874, was the longest game in Road Ranger Stadium history and the second-longest in RiverHawks history. Rockford played a 5:14, 16-inning game on Aug. 15, 2004 at River City, and lost that one, 8-7.

Neither team held a lead of more than two runs and the game featured 11 ties or lead changes.

Aaron Davis, Robbie Knapp and Tony Gonzalez homered for Rockford. Gonzalez hit a shot estimated at close to 500 feet to left-center in the bottom of the 10th to tie the game at 8-8.

In the top of the 12th, Drew Hoisington led off with a single and advanced to third on Chris Sidick’s fifth single of the night. Grandstrand bunted to the right side. Knapp, the first baseman, charged, but couldn’t handle the ball as Hoisington scored. Nate Messner added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly.

Sam Mann (2-2) won in relief. Rick Austin pitched a scoreless inning for his first save. Roy Bringleson (1-3) lost in relief.

Rockford has lost four in a row. Washington has won five straight and has a chance to sweep the series on Friday.

Friday’s game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Culver’s and 104.9 – the X sponsor RiverHawks Baseball Card Night #4, which features the final eight-card subset. The FatWallet.com Friday Night Fireworks Series follows the game.
