RiverHawks rally in eighth to beat Otters, 10-9

July 26, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Robert Sabates extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a 3-for-5, five-RBI night on Saturday as the Rockford RiverHawks beat the Evansville Otters, 10-9.

Sabates hit a home run and two doubles, including a game-tying two-base hit during Rockford’s three-run rally in the eighth inning. The RiverHawks twice trailed by five.

The RiverHawks drew a capacity crowd of 3,807, their record eighth sellout of the season.

Evansville scored four times in the first inning and held leads of 6-1 and 8-3. Chris Crescenzi hit a two-run homer for the Otters in the third inning. Nick Salotti hit a solo shot in the fourth.

Sabates hit his sixth home run of the season, a three-run shot beyond the right-field beer garden, in the fourth inning. Rockford added a run in the fifth.

In the eighth inning, Rockford rallied to take a 10-8 lead. Reliever Nick Utley (1-2) departed after Aaron Davis walked, stole second base and advanced to third on Jason James’ bunt single. Closer Justin Smith entered and blew the save. Sabates doubled to left to drive in Davis. Robbie Knapp and Brad Dutton each hit a sacrifice fly.

Shawn Balteff (2-1) struck out four in two innings of relief to earn the win. James Cramphin gave up a run in the ninth, but earned his second save.

The Otters left the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the ninth inning. They stranded 11 runners on Saturday and 40 in the three-game series. Rockford took two of the three games.

The RiverHawks travel to Marion for a three-game series against the Southern Illinois Miners. The series opener is at 2:05 p.m. Sunday and will not be broadcast.

The RiverHawks come home on Wednesday to play Washington in the opener of a six-game homestand. Forest City Dog Training and Petco sponsor the annual Bark in the Park. Fans are invited to bring their dog to the park. Water bowls, treats, dog toys and other canine necessities will make Road Ranger Stadium a Fido-friendly environment.
