« Back

July 23, 2008 - SAUGET, Ill. – Rockford had a chance to sweep Gateway on Wednesday night, but despite taking an early lead, they couldn’t hang on. The Grizzlies got offensive production from the bottom four hitters in their lineup, helping them to a 7-2 victory over the RiverHawks Wednesday night.

Robbie Knapp led off the second inning with a triple, and scored on a two-out single by Matt Mazurek. Mike Scripture also scored courtesy of a Carlos Rivera single in the same inning. The lead would be short-lived, as Gateway got the offense rolling in the bottom of the second. Michael Campbell hit a lead-off home run off starting pitcher Jim Paduch, and Carter McQuigg added the other three tallies with a homer of his own in his Frontier League debut.

McQuigg would add to the Grizzlies’ run total in the bottom of the fifth with a lead-off home run off Paduch. Gateway would complete their scoring with insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings of the ballgame.

RiverHawks’ starter Jim Paduch (3-6) pitched six innings, giving up five runs on seven hits, and picked up the loss in the ballgame. Gateway’s Derek Blacksher (8-3) was the winning pitcher, pitching seven innings plus two batters into the eighth, giving up two runs on five hits, and striking out seven RiverHawks’ batters. Both teams got production from the bottom of the lineup, as both of Rockford’s runs were driven in by the eighth and ninth batters in the lineup, while the Grizzlies got five runs, including three home runs from the sixth through ninth hitters in their order.
