July 19, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Rookie left-hander Taylor Sinclair struck out a career-high nine and combined with the Rockford bullpen on a five-hitter on Saturday as the RiverHawks beat River City, 6-3.

The RiverHawks took the lead with a five-run fourth inning, in front of a near-sellout crowd of 2,931 at Road Ranger Stadium.

Sinclair escaped a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the first inning, but got into trouble in the second after he walked the first two batters. Luke Barganier singled in a run and Andrew Sweet followed with a base hit. It was the last time a Rascal would reach base until the eighth inning. Brad Hough followed Sweet’s single with a sacrifice fly to start a string of 18 straight hitters retired by Sinclair.

Hough ended the streak with a one-out double in the eighth inning. He later scored on a groundout.

Sinclair (1-0) lasted 7 2/3 innings and earned his first professional win. He struck out six straight hitters in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

River City starter Danny Powers was perfect through three innings and anything but in the fourth inning. Powers walked leadoff hitter Joe Anthonsen on four pitches to start a 10-batter inning. Tony Gonzalez tied the game with a RBI double and Robbie Knapp gave the RiverHawks a 3-2 lead with a RBI single that knocked Powers from the mound. Powers (3-5) gave up three hits and walked two in the inning. All five runners scored.

James Cramphin pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his first professional save.

The rubber match of the three-game series is at 6:05 p.m. Sunday. The Power Connection has purchased every seat in the stadium not previously sold. Standing room-only tickets are all that remains. The first 500 kids through the gate receive RiverHawks Little League bats, courtesy of WREX, the Power Connection and Kmart. It’s also Family Night, when kids get to run the bases after the game.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 16th season.
