RiverHawks sign former San Diego farmhand

July 8, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks announced Tuesday that they have signed outfielder Tony Gonzalez and released outfielder/pitcher Matt Borman.

Gonzalez was the independent Can-Am League Rookie of the Year in 2007. He hit .298 with eight home runs and 38 RBI for the Brockton Rox. The San Diego Padres signed Gonzalez following last season, but released him in extended spring training. Gonzalez returned to Brockton and hit .172 with a home run and three RBI in 20 games this season. The Rox released him on Monday.

Gonzalez, 24, is a right-handed batter and has 1-Year status in the Frontier League.

Borman, a rookie out of Concordia-St. Paul, was used primarily as a left fielder. He hit .245 with two home runs and 15 RBI and drew a team-high 31 walks.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 16th season this summer.
