Rookies rally RiverHawks in 2-1 win

July 4, 2008 - EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Rookie Bryan Cook doubled home the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth and fellow newcomer Tim Flattery escaped a jam in the bottom of the inning on Friday as the Rockford RiverHawks rallied to beat Evansville, 2-1.

The victory opened a nine-game road trip. The RiverHawks do not play a home game for the next two weeks.

Rockford took an early lead on Joe Anthonsen’s RBI single in the third inning. Dan Burton tied the game with a RBI single in the sixth.

The RiverHawks rallied in the ninth inning to beat all-star closer Jon Lewis (0-1). With one out, Chris Raber reached on a pinch-hit single. With two outs, Cook doubled to the fence in right-center field to drive in Raber.

The Otters, who have dropped 24 of 34 games since a 9-0 start to the season, left 11 men on base.

Rookie pitchers earned the win and the save. Kyffin Marcum (1-0) stranded runners at the corners in the eighth inning and won in relief. In the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Bethel led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Flattery struck out both Luke Hetherington and Justin Randall looking to earn his second save.

The RiverHawks play the Otters again at 7:05 p.m. Saturday. They do not play a home game until July 18, when River City visits at 7:05 p.m.
