June 28, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The largest crowd in the history of Road Ranger Stadium watched the Rockford RiverHawks lose, 8-6, to visiting Gateway on Saturday.

Jason James and Joe Anthonsen homered in front of a standing room-only crowd of 4,881, but the RiverHawks left the tying runs on base in the ninth inning. Mike Breyman hit his eighth home run of the year for the Grizzlies and moved to within 20 homers of the all-time Frontier League record.

James hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season, a 400-foot fly to right field, with a man aboard and the wind howling out, in the first inning to give Rockford a 2-1 lead. The game featured seven ties or lead changes.

Breyman led off the fifth inning with his 66th career home run. Former Richmond Rooster Morgan Burkhart, who played in the major leagues with the Boston Red Sox, hit 86 home runs in the 1990s.

Gateway took the lead for good in the sixth inning, when Robbie Minor led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch by Jim Paduch (3-4). Minor, a resident of nearby Rock Falls, was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs.

Gateway reliever Joel Boeschen (2-0) surrendered Anthonsen’s leadoff home run in the seventh inning, but got the win. Zach Gray got out of a two-on, one-out jam in the ninth inning and earned his fourth save.

The announced crowd broke the stadium record of 4,481 set last July 3.

The series continues at 6:05 p.m. Sunday. It’s Kmart/B103 Family Night, when kids get to run the bases after the game. Wheels By RT and WREX sponsor RiverHawks Youth Wristband Night. It’s also Belvidere Youth Baseball Night.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 16th season.
