June 23, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill.Christian Rosa is the latest Rockford RiverHawk headed to affiliated baseball.

The RiverHawks announced today that the rookie catcher has signed with the St. Louis Cardinals and will report to the Batavia Muckdogs, their affiliate in the short-season Class A New York-Penn League.

Rosa played this spring with Division II Tusculum College and compiled a .390 batting average with 12 home runs and 49 RBI. He threw out 10 of 35 base stealers. In three games with the RiverHawks, Rosa was 1-for-11.

Since the franchise moved to Rockford for the 2002 season, 10 players have been signed to a total of 11 contracts by major-league organizations. RiverHawks picked up in previous seasons are: corner infielder Jayson Drobiak (New York Yankees, 2002); pitchers Justin Olson (Minnesota, 2003), Justin Dowdy (Seattle, 2003; Anaheim, 2004), Jason Shelley (Milwaukee, 2003), Scott Sobkowiak (Cincinnati, 2003), Derrick Ellison (Seattle, 2005), Mike Marksbury (Milwaukee, 2007) and Tanner Watson (Chicago Cubs, 2007) and outfielder Rich Austin (Kansas City, 2004).

The RiverHawks added catcher Robert Sabates to the roster. Sabates hit .272 with no home runs and 13 RBI for the Mesa Cubs, Chicago’s Arizona League affiliate, last season.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 16th season.
