Grizzlies pounce early, beat RiverHawks

June 17, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Gateway scored five times with two outs in the first inning and went on to beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 9-4, on Monday at Road Ranger Stadium.

Mike Breyman and Charlie Lisk homered for the Grizzlies, who ended the RiverHawks’ three-game winning streak. Matt Mazurek homered for the RiverHawks.

In the top of the first inning, six straight Grizzlies reached base against Rockford starter Chris Schutt (2-3). Mike Campbell doubled in a run, John Alonso doubled home two more and Breck Draper blooped a two-run single into shallow center field.

Gateway starter Erik Dessau pitched eight innings and held the RiverHawks to six hits. Dessau (2-2) did not give up an earned run until Mazurek led off the eighth with a home run to right. With the victory, the 28th of his career, Dessau passed Tony Casoli and moved into sole possession of fifth place on the all-time Frontier League win list.

The rubber match of the three-game series is at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday. It is a New Vision Laser Center/Applebee’s Wrapped Up In Reading Wednesday.
