Cramphin, bullpen blank Bums

June 10, 2008 - TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – James Cramphin struck out a career-high nine batters over seven shutout innings and the Rockford RiverHawks manufactured a winning fourth-inning rally on Tuesday to beat Traverse City, 3-0.

Rockford pitching combined on a one-hitter – just the second time in the Beach Bums’ three-year history that they have been held to a single hit – and struck out 10 in its second shutout of the season. It is Rockford’s first one-hit performance since July 16, 2004, against Windy City.

The RiverHawks have won three of four since the Beach Bums swept them at Road Ranger Stadium last week.

Cramphin (2-1) retired the first eight batters before Brad Roblin singled in the third inning. He retired the following 10 in order before two walks and a hit batsmen gave Traverse City a bases-loaded, two-out opportunity in the seventh inning. Cramphin retired John Brummett on a grounder to end the threat, the only time the Bums put a man in scoring position.

Cramphin twice struck out cleanup hitter Kyle Maunus, who hit two home runs – one off Cramphin – in last week’s sweep. Cramphin’s previous career best was an eight-strikeout effort in a loss to Washington last season.

Marc Dulkowski and Roy Bringleson each pitched a perfect inning of relief. Bringleson earned his third save.

In the fourth inning, the RiverHawks managed only one hit, but broke a scoreless tie with a three-run rally against Traverse City starter J.T. King. Matt Mazurek led off the third with a single. An error and a walk loaded the bases. Lucas Hulsey was hit by a pitch to force in a run, Joe Anthonsen drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Brad Dutton made it 3-0 on a RBI groundout.

King (2-2) walked five and struck out one in six innings. Only one of the three runs he allowed was earned.

The teams play again at 6:05 p.m. CDT Wednesday. The RiverHawks return home at 7:05 p.m. Friday the 13th for a game against the Kalamazoo Kings.
