RiverHawks fall below .500 with 5-2 loss

June 3, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Two Traverse City pitchers combined on a five-hitter to beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 5-2, Tuesday at Road Ranger Stadium.

With their third loss in a row, the RiverHawks fell below .500 for the first time this season, at 6-7.

Rockford’s Chris Raber, who turned 23 on Tuesday, led off the second inning with his first home run of the season.

The Beach Bums rallied for three runs in the third inning on four straight two-out hits off Rockford starter Jason James (1-2). Jake Whitesides singled in the tying run, and as the back end of a double-steal combination, helped Steve Young swipe home with the go-ahead run.

David Nathanson (3-0) struck out seven to match a career high, scattered five hits, and pitched into the ninth inning. Ted Gjeldum entered with two on, nobody out and the potential tying run at the plate. He struck out two and recorded the last three outs to pick up his first save.

The RiverHawks play the Beach Bums again at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday. It’s Applebee’s/New Vision Laser Center Reading Club Night.
